Side tables or lamp tables are usually purchased to add something to a room rather than to be a starting point of the decoration, however, they can have a huge impact on the look and feel of a space so long as you make the correct choice in terms of the finish and the look of the tables. The great thing is that space is less of a factor to take into account because side tables are on the whole quite small and cheap compared to coffee tables etc.
Side tables are manufactured using various types of material but the most popular choices are glass and metal or wood and in particular oak and pine.
Glass side tables are thought of as being the most contemporary looking option, if not the most homely, however, they are practical in terms of the lack of surface damage but of course we must remember that glass does smash and they may require more cleaning.
Oak side tables are more warming and can be contemporary depending on the design, there are many types of oak used in the manufacture of furniture and on the whole they are very solid and durable. Although they are durable they may need a coat of lacquer a couple of times a year just to protect their finish but this should be highlighted by the retailer and it is not a huge undertaking.
Pine side tables share many of the characteristics with their oak cousins and really the main difference is the finish of the two woods, which is of course your preference and which will look most at home in your room.
The main thing to remember is to ensure that the side table or tables that you choose complement the furniture that is already in the room or is going to be in the room and as long as you buy a quality table there should be no problem as long as any maintenance directives are adhered to.
